The Woodie Fite Senior Center is an adult recreation and educational facility for those over the age of 55, and is a part of Douglas County Senior Services that serves active adults with activities and fitness to keep seniors feeling young.

Please note that due to the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation, the Woodie Fite Senior Center will remain closed until further notice. Any activities, clubs, trips, and dances have been cancelled during this time. We will keep you informed of any updates via email and on our facebook page. Please feel free to call the center with any questions or email us. Please leave a voicemail if we don't answer the phone and we will return your call within 24-48 business hours.   • Hours of Operation

    • We open at 8:00 am. We remain open until the end of the last activity of the day. Most of the time, this means we are open Monday until 6:00 pm, 5:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, and 3:00 pm on Wednesday and Friday. Please check our website for a current list of the month's classes.

    The Woodie Fite Senior Center is a beautiful facility where many friendships have been made, where people love to spend their leisure time, where individuals and couples come to learn and to exercise. Citizens, age 55 and older, find new adventures and explore the wonderful world of recreation. Maslow once said, "The greatest of all needs is the need to belong." We hope everyone who joins us will find a sense of belonging and fulfillment. Our goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of all who enter.

    The Woodie Fite Center opened its doors for classes on September 6, 2005. On opening day we had already signed 513 members. Today, we service more than 8,000 members. On August 7, 2012 we broke ground on a new 5,000 square foot addition thanks to a Community Development Block Grant we received. The grand opening of the building was in January 2013 and this much needed space is being used for our growing population of members.

    Membership and Code of Conduct

    • Membership is open to anyone age 55 and older.
    • The Woodie Fite Center is a recreational and educational center, not a day care facility; therefore, personal care is not available.
    • Members must be mobile and able to independently operate, both mentally and physically, or be accompanied by a registered caregiver.
    • The membership fee for Douglas County residents is free. The non-resident membership fee is $10 annually.
    • All members must sign a liability waiver upon joining the Woodie Fite Center.
    • Membership badges must be worn when you are at the WFSC. Additional and replacement badges are available for purchase for $1.
    Code Of Conduct
    • The goal of the Woodie Fite Center is to promote a pleasant atmosphere where unity and respect for all abound. Membership is a privilege, but may be temporarily or permanently revoked by the following: threatening or hostile behavior, insulting or abusive language (no foul language is permitted), practicing any form of discrimination or violence, violating center regulations, abusing or damaging center property, equipment, or privileges, and not adhering to the Douglas County Parks and Recreation ordinances (posted on WFSC bulletin board). Please feel free to print our membership application from the website and turn it in at the front desk with your photo ID. All new members must present a photo ID before joining the center or registering for any classes.
    • Class or activity registration and tuition: Registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Early Bird tuition for the next month's classes is due between the 15h and 25th of the previous month at a discounted rate. All members must be registered for a class by the 15th of that month. Classes are not pro-rated. There are no refunds unless classes or activities are cancelled by the Woodie Fite Center.
    • All classes have a minimum and maximum enrollment. The center reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment, inclement weather, or emergency situations. Spectators are not allowed to sit in on classes unless they have a coupon for the class. All classes are monthly with classes beginning the first day of that month on their respective day. Please visit the links on the top right of our page to register for classes and obtain a list of classes available each month.
    • Children and individuals under the age of 55 are not permitted to participate in center activities unless the event is designed for family members to attend (e.g., Grandparents Day). A member may sponsor a spouse who is not yet 55.

    Silver Sneakers Program
    Silver Sneakers is the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults. Members receive a basic membership at no cost. The program includes use of basic amenities and access to the signature SilverSneakers classes. The program is offered to Medicare-eligible members of a sponsoring organization or health plan.     Please see the class listings for the SilverSneakers notation on price and also feel free to print our monthly list of activities. Anything on the list with a smiley face is a Silver Sneakers class.

    Social Opportunities
    Our social opportunities consist of a variety of clubs and groups, most of which are free, to allow our active seniors the chance to socialize with their peers while, at the same time, participating in activities, games, and learning opportunities. If you are interested in participating or if you have any questions about our current clubs, you can come to the center or go online to pick up an activity schedule for a list of all clubs and their times.
    • Fiber Arts Club
      • Monday 8:30am - 11:30am
        This group is interested in quilting, knitting, crocheting, doll making, and needle arts. The fiber arts group is a great place to practice your skill, to share your enthusiasm, and to encourage others to get involved.
    • Movie Matinee
      • 4th Tuesday of each month 1:00pm
        Join us for free popcorn, drinks, and a movie on the big screen. We begin at 1:00pm and a different movie is shown each month. Just sign up at the front desk and we look forward to seeing you there.
    • Senior Dance Club
      • 1st & 3rd Saturday 6:00pm - 10:00pm
        The WFC is the host site for these dances. Doors open at 6:00pm and open dancing begins at 7:00pm. The club asks that you bring a snack to share.

    • Birthday Celebration
      • First Friday 11:00am - 12:00pm
        Happy Birthday Woodie Fite Members! Come and celebrate with us on the first Friday of each month if it's your birthday month. Our Sunshine Circle, along with Hightower Funeral Home, provides cake and punch for those members who have a birthday that month.. Call the front desk to register!
    • Bible Study
      • Friday 12:30pm - 2:00pm
        Want to learn more about the books of the Bible, a very rewarding read and a wonderful education about life from past until now, and also how to solve some of the worries you may have, for the Bible is a guide for us all from God's Word and instructions to us. This is a nondenominational study of the Bible and is open to all. All that is needed to join is a Bible and bring your brown bag lunch. Join this group in praise and song and the wonderful study of God's Word.
    • "Read It" Book Discussion Group
      • Third Wednesday of each month 12:00pm - 1:00pm
        The club meets every third Wednesday to discuss the month's literary selection. Members will select most titles for discussion. We hope you'll take the time to participate in this vibrant club!

        This group of Red Hat ladies meets every month to eat and socialize. Come by the center to sign up and for more information. Lots of fun and silliness! $15 annual dues plus any money needed for activities
    • Open Art Studio
      • Wednesday 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
        Come join other fellow artists and work on your project. Whether it is painting, needlework, or any other art form, this is the time for you! Get constructive criticism or just enjoy the company of others while they work.
    • Travel Club
      • The WFC Travel Club is now being facilitated by Willis Tours. There are currently no fees or dues to join. This group meets to plan trips and to receive information on trips that are available through Willis Tours. Please come by the front desk for any information.
    • Wood Carving Club
      • Thursday 3:00pm - 5:00pm
        Wood carving is one of the oldest and simplest art forms. While using a simple jackknife you can start carving a piece of wood. Most woodcarvers start out making very simple objects. Even if you have never considered yourself an artist, you can probably envision what a spoon or bowl should look like. Come join this group and learn more about this art form.
    • Woodie Fite Lending Library
      • The book collection at the Woodie Fite Center has been weeded, reorganized and restructured. The collection will work on the honor system, but we do ask that you sign in the front of each book you take so that we can have a record of each book's use. If you have books that are in good condition and not over 5 years old that you would like to donate, bring them in and place them in the donation basket. In addition, we are adding to our game cabinet. If you have a fun game that you would like to donate, bring it in and we will add it to the others.
    • AARP Monthly Meeting

        Anyone 50 or over can get all the great benefits of membership in AARP for only $12.50 a year. WFC Chapter #4554 is available for WFC members age 55 and older.
    • Alzheimer's Care Givers Support Group

You need to have an incredible amount of understanding and patience. Your efforts help make the life of your loved one as comfortable as possible. That's why it's important that you take time off for yourself to stay mentally fit and ready to face the challenges.
    • TOPS

        This is a chapter of an international organization where people share their experiences, recipes, and weight loss secrets. We have guest speakers from the community such as doctors and exercise specialists to help us learn good health habits as well as planned programs from the TOPS International Organization designed to help us attain our goals of living longer and adding quality to our lives through getting healthy and staying that way! Oh, by the way we are Taking Off Pounds Sensibly, too! Please check with club for annual and weekly dues.
    • Bid Whist
      • Wednesday and Friday 12:30pm - 3:00pm
        Bid Whist, is a card game similar to Spades. The game is played with a full deck of cards, including two jokers. There are four players forming two teams. The teams work together to win "books" to score points. The team that either reaches seven points or forces the opposing team to reach a score of negative seven will win the game.
    • Bowling Club
      • Wednesdays 11:30 am - Come bowl for fun and friendship of others. We will meet at Southern Lanes in Douglasville on Wednesday starting at 11:30 am.
        Cost is $2.00 per game and shoe rental is free. We will have reserved lanes and enjoy a few friendly matches of bowling. Come join in and we will see you there.

        The Bridge Club meets here each week. They have assigned tables, but invite newcomers to join in too. Of course, it takes four to play a table so arrangements will be made to fit everyone in.

        Everyone is welcome to stop in, pick up a few chips and share in an afternoon of fun

        Join us for a fun time with dominoes. If you don't know how to play, it's okay! We will teach you. Just come and socialize with us over a game of Chicken Foot, Texas 42, and Mexican Train - and any others that you might know.

        Euchre is a trick-taking card game most commonly played with four people in two partnerships with a deck of 24 standard playing cards. Everyone is welcome to come and learn how to play.

        Come join us for this fun and exciting way to play Bingo. Bring a handful of pennies and play. The game is simple. Cost is one cent per card per game. We will play many different varieties of Bingo like four corners and Regular bingo. If you win, you get the pot for that game. Sign up at the front desk and join in the fun

      • We have two computers in our library available to members for an hour at a time as long as the center is open. Just sign up at the front desk.
    • Bunco
      • 2nd Friday 10:00am - 12:00 noon
        Bunco is a game played with three dice at tables of four players. That is the technical description of bunco. What bunco really encompasses is chit-chatting with your girlfriends.
    • Ping Pong
      • Monday & Wednesday 1:00pm - 3:00pm
        Your arm muscles and reflex skills are strengthened when you play this sport. It also improves your hand-eye coordination.
    • Pinochle
      • Monday 12:00pm - 6:00pm
        Wednesday 8:00am - 3:00pm
        Pinochle is a trick-taking game typically for two, three or four players and played with a 48 card deck. With advanced notice this group is willing to teach others. There must be at least 4 people interested in learning. Please sign up at the front desk.

    • Pickleball

        Join the new craze that is sweeping the nation. This smaller version of tennis is played indoors and doesn't have all the running required of the tennis sport. A great way to get some exercise, have fun socializing, and just get wrapped up in the excitement.

        The Hiking Club meets here each week. We board a van and will go hike at a place in the one of the nearby parks. Cost will only be a small amount for gas and if there is a fee into the park. So lace up those boots and come join us for some exercise in the great outdoors.
    • XYZ Adventures

        XYZ Adventures is a social club that goes on day trips in the area, giving you the opportunity to enjoy those "Xtra Years of Zest (XYZ!). Trips and times can be found at the center. Please come in for more details.

    Our fitness and educational classes are available for any member at the Woodie Fite Center. We ask that you register at the front desk or online at to hold your spot. All registration must be done by the fifteenth of the month in order to take the class. an early bird incentive is offered on some classes as long as you register by the 25th of the previous month.     • Advanced Line Dancing
      • Monday - 5:15pm - 6:15pm
        Ms. June Shuman, Instructor
        Seasoned dancers are invited to learn some of the most popular line dances. Students must have good knowledge of line dance steps and basic rhythms as this class moves at a faster pace. The class incorporates all types of music and rhythms for the enjoyment of the experienced line dancer.

    • Country Line Dancing

    • Four Square
      • Friday 10:30 am - 11:30 am
        Four square is usually played with a rubber playground ball, on a square court with four maximum players. The objective of four square is to eliminate other players to achieve the highest rank. A player is eliminated when a ball is bounced in a player's quadrant and the player is unable to touch the ball into another player's quadrant.

        This class does include floor exercises. This class includes stretches for the whole body with special focuses on building and maintaining core strength. Come learn to strengthen your core without crunches or sit-ups. Strong abdominal and back muscles are important for balance and preventing back discomfort. This class includes deep stretching to improve long-term flexibility. Please bring your own mat. Wear comfortable clothing to move freely and bring your water bottle. A supple body and spine keeps you young and active!

        Power Stretch is a forty-five minute routine that flows at a faster pace while warming and loosening the entire body, improving flexibility, balance and strength. Other benefits are increased range of motion, reduced pain from arthritis and fibromyalgia, improved posture, manage stress, reduce low back pain, and better mental clarity. All you need is your own body weight, a mat, comfortable clothes, and a positive attitude. Be sure to listen to your body and work at own pace during this class.

        Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of motion, and activity for daily living skills.         Tai Chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. Tai chi has both physical and mental benefits. If done regularly, it improves muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Many people find that it boosts their energy, stamina, and agility, sharpens their reflexes, and gives an overall sense of well-being. The calming and meditative aspects of tai chi allow many to experience its ability to relieve stress. Some claim Tai Chi to be a healing therapy, and it is often used to support other treatments for chronic conditions; arthritis, fibromyalgia, and digestive disorders.

    • Qigong Shibashi
      • Monday 10:00 am -11:00 am
        Qigong Shibashi is a gentle, beautiful and flowing qigong exercise routine that is both a joy to do and deeply relaxing. We particularly like the combination of rocking movements and expanding arm movements in Flying Dove spreads its wings. As well as being a complete exercise routine it can also be used as a warm up for the tai chi forms or other types of physical exercises. This pattern is very good for people who want to move on to Yang style tai chi forms because it introduces the basic elements of weight shifting, co-ordination of hand and leg movements together with controlled breathing.

        POUND is a cardio jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing, and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums. It is a high intensity interval workout incorporating rhythmic movements to get the class literally pounding the floor as you sweat!

      • AARP Defensive Driving Class

          This course is for individuals who want to learn to paint, who may have never picked up a brush before, but have the desire to learn. Everyone has a creative side in them. Why not investigate yours in this class? This is a fun and easy class with others that have the same desire to learn how to paint.       • Foot Reflexology
        • Third Thursday of the Month by appointment ONLY
          As we look at the foot reflexology chart, we can see how parts of the foot "reflex" to other parts of the body. Foot reflexology is a very effective form of massage that can have a deeply relaxing effect on the entire body. Through foot reflexology massage, we can bring balance to any part of the body and greatly enhance the body's healing capacity. The Woodie Fite Center will be offering 30 minute appointment sessions for those who would like to have this done on the 3rd Thursday of each month with a trained therapist. Please see the front desk to sign up and reserve your time.
          $25 per session; $20 for Early Bird.

          August 11th, 2020 11:00 am
          Join us on for a day of competition and ice cream. We will have a tournament style session of Wii Bowling for whoever wants to compete and then win or lose, enjoy some ice cream provided by Kaiser Permanente. If you plan to come, please sign up at the front desk as space is limited. We look forward to seeing you there.

        • Paint Party
          Thursday August 27th, 2020 11:00 am
          Join us for a day of fun and creativity at a paint party. This is perfect for anyone who paints or the beginner who needs step by step instructions. How does it work? You come to the party, all the supplies are provided along with light refreshments, and our instructor Adrienne will walk you through how to paint a specific painting. This will be a fantastic time of fun and laughs so don’t delay and sign up today! Space is limited.
