    Make a difference in the lives of homebound older adults when you deliver a hot meal and a smile. Join Douglas County's Senior Services highly motivated group of volunteers and staff that serve 150 clients each day, Monday through Friday. Volunteer regularly on a daily, weekly, bi-monthly, quarterly, etc. schedule that works best for you. Our clients appreciate and look forward to the daily visits from the volunteers.   • Douglas County Sheriff's Office Public Handgun Classes

    Thursday, April 25 - Sunday, December 1:

    Public Handgun Classes are being offered to Douglas County residents by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Training Division Firearms Instructors. Classes are held one evening of each month from 6 pm until approximately 9 pm. The classes will include instruction and/or discussion on handgun safety, proper shooting techniques cleaning and maintenance, weapon function, etc. The classes are being held at 8470 Earl D. Lee Blvd. Applicants must be a resident or business owner in Douglas County. You must be at least 18 years of age. You must give consent for a background check. There is no fee for this class.   • Douglas County Head Start Registration

    Thursday, April 25 - Wednesday, May 1:

    Douglas County Head Start will begin accepting applications March 1 for the 2019 - 2020 school year. If your child will be 3 or 4 years old by September 1, 2019, and you are interested in a free pre-school environment for your child, call today. This is a federally funded program based on income.   • The American Red Cross- Volunteer Opportunity

    Thursday, April 25 - Tuesday, April 30:

    The American Red Cross is looking for a few good drivers to serve as volunteer transportation specialists to assist in delivering lifesaving blood products to area hospitals. Transportation specialists help ensure that blood products are available when and where they are needed for patients. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood or platelets. Volunteer shifts will originate at our Douglasville Facility and will include travel around the metro Atlanta area. Training and use of Red Cross vehicles will be provided.   • American Sign Language Classes

    Thursday, April 25 - Thursday, May 23:

    Are you interested in learning American Sign Language (ASL)? Learning ASL will allow you to communicate using the 3rd most common language used in the United States. ASL is now recognized as a foreign language at the college level and is beginning to be offered in more high schools as a foreign language as well. Learning to sign can open many opportunities for growth in both your personal and professional life and it’s a lot of fun too!   • Douglas County Challengers Baseball for Special Needs Children

    Thursday, April 25 - Sunday, June 30, 10:00 a.m.:

    It's baseball season! Douglas County Challengers are a baseball team of children with special needs that are physically and/or mentally challenged. The age range is from 5 to 21 years old. The Challengers play every Saturday during the spring and fall seasons at Beulah Rurital Park, 3655 McKown Road. Games start at 10 am. Spring season begins on Saturday, April 6th. Registration is not limited to a particular time as children will be accepted at any time during either spring or fall seasons.     Do you have old or expired medications? Do you have sharps such as epi-pens, diabetic needles, or insulin items that you need to dispose of? Douglasville Police Department has partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration, WellStar Hospitals, Douglas County Water & Sewer Authority, and Douglas County Safe Kids during the DEA Pill Take Back Day to help you clean out those medicine cabinets. Location: Douglasville Municipal Complex at 2083 Fairburn Rd, Douglasville, Georgia 30135 on April 27th between 10:00am and 2:00pm to do your disposals. Sharps need to be placed in a plastic container, no open sharps will be taken.

  • West Georgia Board of Realtors Presents an Evening with Charles Person

    This event on May 2nd at the Douglasville Conference Center is hosted by West Georgia Board of Realtors and sponsored by the National Association of Realtors and other generous partners. Charles Person was a Freedom Rider, participating in one of the biggest civil rights movements which led to the desegregation of buses and other businesses throughout the South. The movement also led to important civil rights legislation, including fair housing. The goal of this dinner is to celebrate civil rights progress, learn from the past, and identify how we can build an alliance within our community for a better future.     Join Beyond the Front Porch, Saturday May 11th, as our students explore a 120,000 square foot museum located in Cartersville, Georgia, where guests are invited to See America's Story through contemporary Western artwork, a Presidential Gallery, Civil War art gallery, and Sagebrush Ranch, an interactive children's gallery. This Smithsonian Affiliate Institution has been open since August 2003, Booth Museum is the only museum of its kind in the Southeast and is the second largest art museum in the state of Georgia.     The Annual Cornhole Tournament will be held at Chapel Hills Golf Club in Douglasville on May 17th. Proceeds from the Cornhole Tournament benefit annual Leadership Scholarships that are presented to local high school seniors who demonstrate outstanding leadership and community service potential. Proceeds also fund young professionals seeking to further their education. The double elimination Cornhole Tournament begins at 4 p.m., with registration beginning at 3 p.m.. Registration for Chamber members is $35 for each team of two and $50 for each team of two for non-members. The Cornhole Tournament is open to teams of all ages.     Come join the Kiwanis Club of Douglas County on June 2, 2019 for the 25th Annual Silver Anniversary Sweetwater Triathlon-Duathlon and 5k at Sweetwater Creek State Park, 1750 Mount Vernon Road. The Triathlon begins in the reservoir with a 200 yard swim, followed by a 10 miles bike on asphalt and finishing with a 5K run through a wooded trail. Experience some of what the beautiful park has to offer on this beginner Tri. The Duathlon will begin on the trail, with the 5K run, followed by the 10 miles asphalt bike ride and finishing with a 5K run on the trail. The 5K will run on the road and trail.
