  • American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) Scholarship Opportunity

    Thursday, February 20 - Friday, May 15:

    The Douglas County Charter Chapter # 1646 of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) is offering one scholarship worth $1,000 funded through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund to one deserving area student. Each year, local chapters of ABWA provide Stephen Bufton Memorial Scholarships (SBMEF) to female students attending an accredited U.S. Technical College. To be eligible for the scholarship consideration, candidates must be women who (1) must be citizens of the United States; residents of either Douglas or Carroll County, Georgia; (2) are attending a technical college in August 2020. The school must be licensed, accredited or state-approved. Eligible women interested in applying for the scholarship should contact today! Scholarship applicants must contact the co-chairs to have the online application initiated. A minimum of three (3) eligible completed applications are required for the scholarship to be awarded. Applications must be completed by May 15, 2020. The scholarship recipient(s) will be notified in July 2020.

  • Boundary Waters Aquatic Center: Swim Lesson Registration

    Thursday, February 20 - Sunday, March 1:

    Register for swim lessons at Boundary Waters Aquatic Center starting on February 1st for Douglas County residents for $55 and February 17th for non-residents for $70. You can register online. There will be three sessions, session 1 (March 9-26), session 2 (April 13-30), and session 3 (May 11-28). Space is limited so don't wait to register!

    Visit Douglas County Museum History & Art to view the Douglas County's Sesquicentennial Exhibit entitled "Our Past" from February 18th to December 19th.   • Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy Registration

    Thursday, February 20 - Tuesday, April 14, 6:00 p.m.:

    The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office hosts a 12 week course as a way for the community to get a behind-the-scenes look at how the DCSO works. The next round of classes starts on February 20, 2020, at 6:30pm at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 8470 Earl D. Lee Blvd. on the second floor. Dinner will be provided starting at 6:00pm. The course is free, but they ask that those who are interested be able to attend all twelve weeks. The goal is not to teach attendees how to become law enforcement officers or pressure them into a career in law enforcement, but rather to give them some insight into the duties and responsibilities of our personnel. Applicants must be a resident or business owner in Douglas County, be at least 21 years of age, and give consent for a background check as part of the application process. More information about the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy and a link to the application can be found on our website. They have also shared information about the program on our social media platforms. There will be applications available in our lobby if anyone wants to stop by and fill one out.

  • Eviction Prevention Project Housing Legal Clinic

    2nd Thursday and 4th Monday

    Eviction Prevention Project of the Georgia Legal Services Program provides free legal services to assist individuals and families facing eviction and other housing problems such as landlords refusing to make repairs. They currently have a legal clinic twice a month in Douglas County where individuals who need legal advice on housing issues can stop by to ask an attorney questions. The dates, times, and location are on the flyer attached to this email (2nd Thursdays from 10am-12pm and 4th Mondays from 6:30-8:30pm at the Douglas County Public Library).     Connect Douglas is proposing changes to three of its four bus routes. Information about the proposed changes will be available at a series of public meetings in late February and early March. Connect Douglas is considering the changes after evaluating the first six months of service and what needs to be done to make the system more efficient and more accessible to the public.     Youth Art Month (YAM) emphasizes the value of arts education in Douglas County’s schools and how it helps influence the upcoming generation of creative thinkers, educators, and business leaders. YAM empowers students by giving them outlets to show their work in public at an early age. It also gives their teachers some well-deserved recognition for the hard work the educators have put in while encouraging these young minds. Visitors of the Cultural Arts Council are bound to be impressed by work that dazzles the gallery walls this March.     Saturday, March 14:

    Join Beyond the Front Porch, Saturday March 14th, as they tour this science and technology museum that features galleries devoted to minerals, fossils, transportation technology, and hands-on science experiences. Students will even have an opportunity to dig for fossils and pan for gems. The admission, transportation and lunch are FREE for the students as long as a paid adult is traveling with them.     Celebrate YOU! will feature an interactive business showcase, VIP Meet and Greet reception, motivational breakout sessions, shopping and more at the Douglasville Conference Center. Celebrate YOU! will also feature keynote speaker, former WSB-TV anchor and Emmy Award winner, Monica Pearson. She is the first woman and first minority to anchor the daily evening news in Atlanta, where she worked for 37 years. Since retiring in 2012, Pearson has graduated with a master’s degree, Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Pearson is also one of three hosts of the Emmy nominated Georgia Public Broadcasting show, "A Seat at the Table". Most recently she has become a radio and television spokesperson for businesses and institutions. Tickets are $30 for general admission and $50 for VIP tickets.     The Douglasville Police Department will be hosting a 6K Run that starts and ends at the Douglasville Public Safety Complex located at 2083 Fairburn Road. The information on the map is attached to the FB Event on the Douglasville Police Department FB Page and is done through Google Maps. Registration and legal forms will need to be completed before the race. We will take registrations up until the morning of the run, but can only guarantee t-shirt sizes through March 12. Participants will need to be 18 years of age or older due to the route. This event is $25.00 and a run packet and t-shirt will be provided. Registration is $25.00 payable via phone or in person.
