The Comprehensive Land Use Plan is a guide for the future of Douglas County. This plan will serve as a blueprint for development and growth over the next 20 years.
Benefits of Comprehensive Planning
The local comprehensive plan is a fact-based resource for local constituents which tracks the implementation of community-based policies. Well-planned communities are better prepared to attract new growth and appropriately locate that growth in a highly competitive market. In essence we plan so that the community can shape and guide growth and development.
2013 Update to the Comprehensive Plan
2013 kicked off the official update to the Douglas County Comprehensive Plan. The Douglas County Board of Commissioners appointed a thirteen member stakeholder committee which met over the spring and summer with the Atlanta Regional Commission and Staff to help identify the following: assets and challenges; community needs and opportunities; a community vision; and a work program to address our needs, opportunities and vision while accentuating and building on the assets we have to ensure the continued long-term success of the County. Once the stakeholder committee finished its series of meetings, the results were shared with the Planning and Zoning Board and Board of Commissioners. Information from all of these meetings was combined and resulted in the development of the draft plan and draft future land use map.
The initial draft 2013 Comprehensive Plan and initial draft 2013 Future Land Use Map were presented at an Open House on September 17th in Citizen's Hall with the goal being to gather public comment on the document before the final draft was made public. Once these comments were gathered and taken into consideration, the proposed final documents were made available and forwarded to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for formal review. On Tuesday, November 5, 2013, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners adopted the 2013 update to the Comprehensive Plan. It is available for review on the right-hand side of this page as a downloadable document.
