The United States Constitution, as well as the State of Georgia Constitution, guarantees all people accused of a criminal offense the right to an attorney, regardless of their financial status. Under the leadership of Monica Myles, the Douglas County Public Defender's Office represents individuals who are being prosecuted in the State and Superior Courts of Douglas County. With eleven attorneys on staff who solely practice criminal law, the Public Defender's Office can handle any type of criminal case. Recognizing the prospect of losing one's liberty is a difficult and trying time for anyone, our attorneys are trained to ensure that individual rights are protected.
To apply for a Public Defender, you must complete a financial affidavit in person at the Public Defender's Office located on the second floor of the Douglas County Courthouse. In order to qualify, you must meet the Federal Poverty Guidelines. There is a $50 application fee that can only be paid by Cashier's Check or Money Order; personal checks and cash are not accepted. If the applicant is currently in jail and unable to come into the office, please call the office for instructions on how to apply. The office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., except holidays.
