PINES: Public Information Network for Electronic Services
PINES is an unique initiative from the Office of Public Library Services, Georgia Board of Regents, to bring the vision of a Statewide library card for Georgia to reality.

Phases One and Two of PINES have seen 41 public library systems, comprising 211 libraries from across the State of Georgia, join together to implement a state-of-the-art automated integrated library system as well as a new set of policies which allows any citizen of Georgia to receive a PINES card, valid at any PINES library for borrowing materials. The PINES database lists all items owned by the 211 participating libraries, and all PINES library patrons can see and borrow books and other materials from any PINES library.

PINES is centrally administered and managed. Project staff handle help desk issues, offer training and support to member libraries, perform system administration tasks, and purchase, install, and maintain hardware, software and peripheral equipment.

A patron at any PINES library can see the holdings of every participating library, increasing his/her access to materials exponentially. Patrons' ability to borrow items from any PINES library makes the concept of "access, not ownership" a reality in Georgia. An outstanding example of resource-sharing, PINES truly levels the playing field for all citizens of our State. Library directors, library staff, and the Georgia Public Library Service project staff have worked together to craft a system that works for everyone. The scale of this project is unprecedented; the State of Georgia is leading the way in cooperative public library efforts and cutting edge library technology for all citizens.
