HAZEL BURTON RECEIVES SPIRIT OF DOUGLAS AWARD 2018
February 12, 2019
Douglasville, GA - On February 8, 2018, Stewart Middle School celebrated the accomplishments of the Douglas County government and their students through a Black History Month Program entitled "History in the Making."
Throughout the program, prominent leaders within the community, such as Board of Commission Chairman Dr. Romona Jackson Jones and City of Douglasville Mayor Rochelle Robinson, briefly spoke to the large crowd of community members to provide them with words of encouragement and hope for the future generation of leaders. The program also included several musical performances and speeches from students, teachers, and administrators of Stewart Middle School.
To conclude the program, Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner, presented the Spirit of Douglas Award of 2018 to Mrs. Hazel Burton. Fortner created the award to recognize people who exhibit the Spirit of Douglas County through their service to the community. Mrs. Burton was presented the award for her service to the Douglas County community since 1964. Burton was an employee of Stewart Middle School from January 1964 to February 1986. In May of 1986, she transitioned to local government in the Douglas County Clerk's office.
"She truly has a heart full of grace and a soul full of love. She has shown that greatness comes through service," Fortner said. During her acceptance speech, Burton referenced the importance of service and how it is a worthy endeavor that brings people and communities together. It is Mrs. Burton's strong character, willingness to serve, professionalism, and kindness that makes her deserving of such recognition.
"I was truly surprised, honored, and humbled to receive such an outstanding award. I have always enjoyed my job and working with the public but I had no idea people were taking notice of my actions," said honoree Hazel Burton. "Due to the fact that I did not get a chance to attend college and become a teacher, it has been my desire to be a servant in my family, my community and Douglas County. I sincerely would like to thank everyone responsible for this great honor."
Burton currently serves as the Office Manager for the Douglas County Clerk of Superior Court and Clerk of State Court.
