DOUGLAS COUNTY BOC CHAIR MEETS U.S. SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE

Douglasville, GA - Douglas County Board of Commissioners Chairman Romona Jackson Jones met with the United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue Friday, April 5, 2019 after the former Georgia Governor toured the National Detector Dog Training Facility in Newnan, Georgia. Secretary Perdue thanked Chairman Jones for coming out after he held a press conference at the sprawling facility which is also home of the U.S. Custom Border Protection/Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service's Beagle Brigade.

Secretary Perdue's tour comes weeks after the Douglas County Animal Services Department received praise and recognition for its contribution of a former shelter beagle, named "Chipper," who completed training at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) facility.

"Secretary Perdue's visit to our region from Washington, D.C. shows how valuable Douglas County Animal Services Control Officers are to assisting our federal government," Chairman Jones said. "It's an honor to meet one of our Cabinet members and share how our local government is helping to protect our nation's borders from illegal plants & meats."

"Having the opportunity to meet Secretary Perdue and personally share how much we respect and value our collaborative working relationship with local, state and federal government is a huge treat," Douglas County Communications Director Rick Martin said.

Douglas County Animal Services rescued "Chipper," from the side of the road on April 11, 2018, in Villa Rica, Georgia. The USDA Animal and Plant Inspection Service, selected Chipper for training on April 16, 2018, after a thorough examination. Chipper was one of four dogs recognized during a March pinning ceremony identified as being responsible for helping protect the United States' airports and seaports from illegal meats and plants from entering.
