Living. Growing. Prospering.
Douglasville, GA - Douglas County was represented by the Information Systems Department at the Georgia Technology Authority's (GTA) ribbon cutting ceremony and first ever Technology Summit at the new Georgia Cyber Center in Augusta, Georgia.
The Georgia Cyber Center celebrated its grand opening on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 with Governor Nathan Deal and a large crowd of Federal, State, and local leaders. The ribbon cutting ceremony signified the opening of the first building on the new campus, the first phrase of a cyber education and technical collaboration complex being built by the state. The center spans 332,000 square feet in two adjacent buildings, the Hull McKnight Building and the 340-seat auditorium. The total investment for the campus is estimated at over 100 million dollars at completion.
During the Technology Summit on the following day, speakers discussed the growing need for collaboration between all levels of government, education, and business to tackle the challenges of cybersecurity and the changing technology landscape. "I'm excited about the top down approach our state leaders appear to be taking in an attempt to breakdown the silos that exist in technology education and cyber security between the various branches of government and the university system," Douglas County Director of Information Systems, Russ Martin said. "The potential for free or low-cost cyber education available through the Cyber Center could be huge for local government."
The keynote speaker, Etay Maor of IBM Security provided attendees with an in-depth look at some of the tools and techniques being utilized by cyber-attacks and his view on combating cyber threats. Other guest speakers and roundtable panel discussions were represented by GTA, Augusta University, Georgia Institute of Technology, FBI, GBI, U.S. Army, and many more institutions and businesses around the state. The summit concluded with a tour of the new facility. The second building, the Shaffer MacCartney Building, is under construction and set to open in December 2018.
