Living. Growing. Prospering.
Douglasville, Georgia- 'Always ready, always there' is the motto for the National Guard of the United States and Sergeant Major Heath Cowart is always ready to answer the call when his country and his county needs him.
Douglas County Government Services Assistant Director Heath Cowart has been ordered to active duty and will be deployed to Afghanistan for one year beginning in October of 2018. The Douglas County native will be part of a pilot program initiated by the Pentagon where his National Guard unit -- the 48th Brigade Infantry Combat Team "Volunteers" out of Macon, Georgia -- will merge with the 3rd Infantry Division "Rock of the Marne" out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.
SGM Cowart is a decorated soldier with several awards and recognition for his heroic actions. These awards include the Bronze Star Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, four Army Good Conduct Medals, the Combat Action Badge and all Professional Development Ribbons. As of September 12, 2018, SGM Cowart will have served 21 years as a member of the U.S. Army on either active duty or as a National Guard military member. SGM Cowart is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.
This will be the second deployment during Cowart's tenure as a Douglas County government employee. The first deployment occurred from 2011 to 2012, when he served in Kosovo. Cowart has been a Douglas County employee for 13 years and has worked within the Engineering and Government Services departments. Cowart currently holds the title of Assistant Director of Government Services, and he is responsible for overseeing Fleet Management and Solid Waste Services with Government Services Director Gary Jenkins.
"Heath came to us in 2015 after working in Development Control for 8 years prior to transitioning to this department. I could not be happier with Heath and his performance as the Assistant Director of Government Services. He has been deployed overseas several times throughout his military career and is scheduled for his fifth and final deployment this year before military retirement," Jenkins said. "On behalf of all of the employees of Government Services, we would like to thank Heath for his service to his country and his community. We wish him a safe return home."
SGM Cowart resides in Winston, Georgia with his wife Marissa and their three children Addison, Emma and Jackson Cowart.
