Personal - Married 46 years to high school sweetheart, Peggy
- Three children: Angelle, a teacher; Michael, Jr., engineer; and Nicholas, law enforcement; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren
Community - 1997 - 2005: Founder and President of Friends of Douglas County, a citizen advocacy group focused on the quality of life issues of the County's citizens
- 2004: Established the Douglas County Greenway Trail Alliance to develop a network of multi-use trails throughout the County
- 2002: Worked to acquire funding for the Senior Center, Fire/EMS, Roads, Parks and Recreation, and Green Space Acquisition through the SPLOST
