Ms. Penny McHenry
The American Hydrangea Society was founded by Ms. Penny McHenry in 1994 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Society was formed for people who love hydrangeas and want to "study and learn about the genus Hydrangea, its species and cultivars, as well as its culture, habits, hardiness, and performance." The family of Ms. McHenry has graciously allowed the use of her name for this Festival. Both the "Penny Mac" and "Mini Penny" hydrangea varieties are named in her honor. AWARD-WINNING STANDARD FLOWER SHOW
Please click HERE for the list of flower, design design, and artistic crafts categories; flower entry form; instructions on how to enter; and other information.

The Standard Flower Show is the centerpiece of the Hydrangea Festival and has won State, Regional and National awards for its presentation each of the past five years. It is presented in the beautiful multi-story Atrium of the Douglas County Courthouse.

The 2013 Standard Flower Show included over 500 horticulture entries, 24 design tables, 30 youth design entries, a youth educational exhibit, 2 educational exhibits, and 12 Artistic Craft exhibits.

The theme hydrangea for the 2014 Standard Flower Show is "Ruby Slippers" (Hydrangea quercifolia). In early summer, "Ruby Slippers" is covered with clusters of flowers on stems that are held upright above the foliage. Flowers open white, but quickly turn pale pink and then deepen to rose.

"Ruby Slippers" brings to mind "The Wizard of Oz", the 1939 movie, and the 2014 Standard Flower Show will develop this theme throughout the exhibits. In addition, "The Wizard of Oz" will be shown in Citizen's Hall of the Courthouse adjacent to the Standard Flower Show. "The Wizard of Oz" will celebrate its 75th year in 2014. The initial screening of the film was June 5th, 1939 - 75 years minus one day from the festival.

Entries into the different categories of the Standard Flower Show are free. Entry information can be found to the right of this narrative under "Downloadable Documents".

2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 Best Flower Show in Georgia in its Category; Best Flower Show in Georgia Overall
