Douglas County to Celebrate Juneteenth with Commemorative Reception
Douglas County Board of Commissioners is marking this coming Juneteenth holiday with a commemorative reception on Thursday, June 16th, 2022, at the Douglas County Courthouse from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The courthouse is located at 8700 Hospital Drive, Douglasville, GA. 30134. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
“The Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously 5-0 at the Tuesday, June 8th, 2021, commission meeting to proclaim June 19, as Juneteenth Day in Douglas County in observance of its historical significance,” said Rick Martin, Director of Communications and Community Relations.
June 19, 2022, falls on a Sunday, and the Board of Commissioners will observe the federal holiday on Monday, June 20th. The Courthouse and county government offices will be closed except for Sheriff and Fire & EMS emergency services.
Juneteenth is the twelfth federal legal holiday. The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution on June 15, 2021, to give Juneteenth the legal holiday status. Federal offices, as well as banks and other businesses will be closed, and mail will not run-on June 20th.
June 19 is celebrated as “Juneteenth,” in honor of one of the final acts of emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
