Statement Regarding Vendor Error on Douglas County Tax Assessment Notices

(Douglasville, Georgia) On June 23, 2023, the Douglas County Appraisal Department distributed property tax assessment notices to more than 54,000 parcels across the county. Due to a software glitch with the county’s newly acquired computer-based appraisal system from Tyler Technologies, a new Douglas County vendor, the Homestead Exemption was not calculated and included in some mailed notifications. This error has resulted in incorrect assessments for approximately 15,000 homeowners.

While the error is only reflected in paper notices that were mailed, the Homestead Exemption calculations, are correct in the Appraisal Department’s system. Notices of the error are currently being mailed to all impacted property owners.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this technical error has caused,” said Douglas County Chief Appraiser Steve Balfour. “We are working diligently to notify the impacted property owners and remain committed to not only making this right, but making our team available to address any questions, issues, or concerns in an expeditious manner.”

The Appraisal Department is working to place corrected assessments online. Meantime, any property owner wishing to check their correct assessment, including their Homestead Exemption, may contact the Douglas County Appraisal Department at 770-920-7728.

Property assessment appeal applications remain due by August 7, 2023.
