Douglas County Voters Encouraged to Confirm Their Voter Registration Status

No Contact/Activity Notices Being Mailed this Week

(Douglasville, GA)- As state and federal law requires, the Douglas County Board of Elections and the Director of Voter Registration and Elections must periodically review and update voter registration lists. After any registered voter does not cast a ballot for two consecutive state election cycles (even-numbered years and after four years), the Registrar/Election Superintendent is required to verify the voter's residence during the fifth year to determine if the voter is still a county resident, alive, and wishing to remain a registered voter.

"Our right to vote is our most fundamental Constitutional right. Your vote is your voice, and updating and keeping your voter registration information current is critical to keeping your voice heard. 'We the people' only really works when the people fully participate," said Milton Kidd, Douglas Co. Director of Elections & Voter Registration.

The Douglas County Board of Elections will be directly responsible for the mailout of the No Contact Notices. The No Contact mailing will be conducted pursuant to O.C.G.A. 21-2-234. For this mailing, confirmation notices will be sent to voter records without contact with their registrar for five calendar years. Once notices are mailed, voters will be given 30 days to contact their county registrar. If they do not respond to the notice within that timeframe, their records will be moved to “inactive” status. As of this state notification, 2,617 notices for Douglas County are going out in the mail.

The Secretary of State will mail No Activity for Two General Election Cycles (N.G.E.) notices to Georgia's citizens. The N.G.E. mailing will be conducted pursuant to O.C.G.A. 21-2-235. For this mailing, confirmation notices will be sent to voter records in “inactive” status for two even-year General Elections. Once the notices are mailed, voters will be given 30 days to contact their county registrar. If they do not respond to the notice within that timeframe, their records will be moved to “canceled” status; as of this notification from the Secretary of State, 2,309 notices for Douglas County were going out in the mail.

Douglas County has over 150,000 residents and currently 112,443 registered voters. There will be 4,926 notices being mailed.
